The English Reading Specialist supports students in developing reading skills, fluency, comprehension, and a love for literature. They assess reading levels, create targeted interventions, and collaborate with teachers and families to improve literacy outcomes, particularly for struggling or at-risk readers.
Key Responsibilities
🔹 Instructional Support
- Provide direct reading instruction to students (individually or in small groups).
- Tailor interventions using research-based strategies (e.g., phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension).
- Develop and implement reading plans based on student data and learning needs.
- Teach decoding, encoding, and comprehension strategies.
🔹 Assessment & Progress Monitoring
- Administer and interpret formal and informal reading assessments (e.g., DIBELS, F&P, STAR, iReady).
- Track student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
- Provide data-driven feedback to staff and parents.
🔹 Collaboration
- Work closely with classroom teachers to align reading interventions with core curriculum.
- Serve on Response to Intervention (RTI) or Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) teams.
- Offer professional development or coaching to teachers on literacy strategies and tools.
🔹 Program Development
- Support implementation of school- or district-wide literacy initiatives.
- Assist in selecting instructional materials and resources for reading instruction.
- Participate in IEP meetings or 504 plan development for students with reading disabilities.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education or English; Master’s degree in Reading, Literacy, or a related field (preferred).
- Certification: State Reading Specialist Certification or Literacy Endorsement.
- Experience: At least 2–5 years of teaching experience, preferably in elementary or middle school settings.
- Skills:
- Strong knowledge of literacy instruction methods
- Data analysis and differentiated instruction skills
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities
- Familiarity with intervention programs (e.g., Wilson, Orton-Gillingham, Leveled Literacy Intervention)
Work Environment
- Typically employed in elementary, middle, or secondary schools
- May work in pull-out programs, push-in classroom support, or after-school tutoring
- Collaborates with a team of educators, including special education teachers and administrators
